BREATH WORK

Perfection In Every Breath

These advanced breathing techniques are excellent when used to enhance manifestation practices. The key principles behind these techniques—such as focusing intention, harnessing energy, and connecting with the universe—align well with the principles of manifestation. Here’s how you can integrate these techniques with manifestation practices:

Advanced techniques for directing the breath to move chi (or qi) within the body, and directing it out into the universe to multiply and return, are often rooted in traditional Chinese practices such as Qigong, Tai Chi, and various forms of meditative breathing. Here are five advanced techniques:

1. Microcosmic Orbit (Xiao Zhou Tian)

The Microcosmic Orbit is a foundational Taoist meditation practice that involves circulating chi along two primary energy pathways in the body: the Governor Vessel (Du Mai) and the Conception Vessel (Ren Mai).

Technique:

  • Preparation: Sit comfortably with your spine straight, or lie down. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to relax.
  • Focus on the Lower Dantian: Place your attention about two inches below your navel (the Lower Dantian), which is considered the body’s main energy reservoir.
  • Breathing and Visualization: Inhale deeply and visualize drawing energy from the earth into your Lower Dantian. As you exhale, visualize the energy moving up your spine along the Governor Vessel to the crown of your head.
  • Circulating the Chi: Continue to inhale, guiding the energy down the front of your body along the Conception Vessel, returning to the Lower Dantian. This completes one cycle.
  • Repeat: Practice this circulation for several minutes, gradually increasing the duration as you become more comfortable.

2. Breath of Fire (Kapalabhati)

While originating from Kundalini Yoga, the Breath of Fire technique can be adapted to move chi powerfully within the body.

Technique:

  • Posture: Sit comfortably with your spine straight.
  • Breathing Pattern: Begin with a series of rapid, forceful exhales through the nose, using the diaphragm to push the breath out. Allow the inhales to happen passively in between each exhale.
  • Focus on the Navel: Direct your focus to your navel area, feeling the energy build and circulate with each breath.
  • Pacing: Start with a slower pace and gradually increase the speed as you become more comfortable. Practice for 1-3 minutes, followed by a period of deep, slow breathing to integrate the energy.

3. Cosmic Breath (Hunyuan Qigong)

This Qigong technique involves breathing in universal energy (hun yuan chi) to enhance and multiply your internal chi.

Technique:

  • Preparation: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, and spine straight. Relax your body and mind.
  • Inhale Universal Energy: As you inhale, imagine drawing energy from the universe into your body through your crown and the palms of your hands.
  • Filling the Body: Visualize this energy filling your entire body, particularly your Lower Dantian.
  • Exhale and Expand: As you exhale, imagine this energy expanding outwards into the universe, creating a cycle of exchange. Feel a connection between your internal chi and the universal energy.
  • Repetition: Practice this breathing pattern for several minutes, feeling the flow and exchange of energy with each breath.

4. Three Dantian Breathing

This technique focuses on the three main energy centers in the body: the Lower Dantian (below the navel), the Middle Dantian (heart area), and the Upper Dantian (forehead).

Technique:

  • Posture: Sit or stand comfortably with a straight spine.
  • Lower Dantian Breathing: Inhale deeply into your Lower Dantian, filling it with chi. Exhale and feel the energy condense and strengthen in this area. Repeat for several breaths.
  • Middle Dantian Breathing: Shift your focus to your heart area. Inhale deeply, drawing chi into the Middle Dantian. Exhale, feeling the energy condense and balance your emotions. Repeat for several breaths.
  • Upper Dantian Breathing: Finally, focus on your forehead. Inhale deeply, drawing chi into the Upper Dantian. Exhale, feeling the energy condense and clarify your mind. Repeat for several breaths.
  • Integration: Combine the breathing into a smooth cycle, moving chi through all three Dantians with each inhale and exhale.

5. Tummo Breathing (Inner Fire)

Tummo breathing is a powerful technique from Tibetan Buddhism, used to generate internal heat and move chi forcefully through the body.

Technique:

  • Posture: Sit comfortably with your spine straight.
  • Visualize the Inner Fire: As you inhale deeply, visualize a small flame at your Lower Dantian. With each breath, imagine this flame growing stronger and more intense.
  • Breath Retention: After a deep inhale, hold your breath and visualize the flame expanding, filling your entire body with heat and energy.
  • Forceful Exhale: Exhale forcefully through your mouth, releasing any stagnant energy and spreading the internal heat throughout your body.
  • Repetition: Repeat this cycle for several minutes, building the intensity of the inner fire with each round.

Conclusion

These advanced techniques require practice and dedication, and it’s essential to approach them with patience and mindfulness. Over time, they can significantly enhance your ability to move and manipulate chi within your body and in connection with the universe, leading to profound physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits.
